Civility: Tips on Discussing Political Elections
Hold judgment, use empathy and seek understanding
Don’t assume knowing why someone has the political beliefs they hold. Listen to other’s perspectives, imagine yourself with their life experiences and ask questions to seek how their beliefs were formed.
Respect differences and find a way to unite
Healthy conversations cannot be had without trust all participants respect one another. Respect is accepting one for who they are, even when having differences.
When listening to differing viewpoints, seek a way to connect your beliefs. Is there a common thread? Is there a way to compromise? Is there a way to unite?
It’s a conversation, not a debate!
Remember when you walk away from a conversation, there is not a winner or loser. Stop prepping your response and actively listen. Keep a calm demeanor; check your tone, facial expression and body language.
Before speaking, ask yourself….
Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Is it civil?
